PIL seeks hike in rail damages-TOI

Curare Legal, in its pro-bono initiative, filed a PIL in Delhi High Court challenging the ceiling imposed on compensation paid to victims/claimants of Railway Accidents. Currently the rules framed by the Railway Board last amended in 1997 provide for a maximum amount of Rs 4 lakh or else forces the victim/claimant to approach regular civil courts for higher compensation, thereby defeating the very purpose of establishment of separate and independent tribunal.

A division bench of Chief Justice D Murugesan and Justice V K Jain issued notice on 20th February asking Railways to respond to the contentions raised in the Petition.
